In Brittany Haas, Owen Marshall, and Joe Walsh, we find a veritable folk music power trio. As masters of old-time, celtic, and bluegrass music, all three musicians are widely respected on their chosen instruments (fiddle, guitar, and mandolin). What happens when the grittiness of American Old Time fiddle music meets the ethereal sounds of the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle? With this band, Brittany Haas and Dan Trueman try to answer this question, with cellist Natalie Haas. Brittany Hass played with Crooked Still, Yonder Mountain String Band, Tony Trischka, with Steve Martin on Letterman and SNL as well as on Martin’s Grammy award-winning CD, The Crow. Winner of MacArthur Foundation and Guggenheim grants, Trueman is a composition professor at Princeton, co-founder of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra and widely recognized as a scholar and performer on the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle.
12/31 - First Night at the Presbyterian Parish House, Morristown, NJ 7:15pm
4TET is four of traditional music's most compelling young talents. Fiddler Brittany Haas of the seminal folk-bluegrass band Crooked Still has teamed up with fiddler Cleek Schrey, guitarist Jordan Tice and innovative percussive dancer Nic Gareiss. All share an interest in performing traditional music, exploring new compositions, and simultaneously maintaining and critiquing the conventions surrounding folk music today. Following the work of mentors Bruce Molsky, Eleanor Neary, Darol Anger, Eileen Carson-Schatz, and others, 4tet continues the legacy and lineage of traditional music while probing the creative potential of fiddle tunes, traditional song, and percussive dance.
The Trio of Brittany Haas, Jordan Tice, and Paul Kowert is a confluence of three of the most exciting young voices in acoustic music today. While each member carries an impressive resume of professional experience, it is the devotion to collaboration and the pursuit of a unique group sound that sets them apart.
